Sunday Worship

li·tur·gi·cal
1. of or pertaining to formal public worship or liturgies.

At First Baptist Church of Kalamazoo, you are not expected to have "arrived" morally or spiritually. You are not required to accept a narrow creed or list of tightly-packaged doctrines. You are asked only to be yourself, a mixture of faith and doubt, strengths and weaknesses, dreams and frustrations ~ and to yearn and hope to grow in your understanding of God, other people, and yourself.

Every Sunday we worship the goodness of God together.  Our church building is made from brick and mortar, but inside those heavy doors are real people, searching for answers about faith and the word of God.  This is where we work together to find those answers.  Jesus didn't turn anyone away, neither do we.

We gather in our New England-style sanctuary to hear words of Scripture, be instructed by the liturgical message of our pastor, sing hymns, experience the beauty of the Chancel Choir, the Letourneau organ or the Fazioli piano, special guest instrumentalists, as well as support one another by recognition of our mutual needs and aspirations.

Small group studies for adults begin at 9:30 a.m. Worship services are on Sundays at 10:30 beginning with a time of welcome and announcements.

Those who would like to participate in our music ministry may do so by becoming members of the Chancel Choir. Robert Jordan, Music Director and Organist, shares his talents by bringing special musical programs to our Sunday worship.

Children are part of the worship service.
After the Children's Moment children ages infant - 5 years may be dismissed to the nursery.  A Sunday School teacher will escort children grades K - 4 to the classroom next to the nursery for Sunday School.  Children may attend Sunday School or stay in worship.

Communion with bread and cup is received in the pews the first Sunday of each month, offered to all who wish to receive. You are not required to be a member of this congregation or denomination to take communion.

Ample free parking is available every Sunday on surrounding streets and across Michigan Avenue in the two bank parking lots.

  • Nursery and childcare are available.
  • Restrooms (including handicap with diaper changing table) are available off the main floor hallway.
  • Most portions of our lower building are wheel chair-accessible. An elevator to the sanctuary is available.
